"Accessibility positively impacts everyone, not just people with disabilities."

Robin joined THG in 2021 and since then, has been on a mission to raise awareness of accessibility and disability inclusion in the workplace.

"I've been with THG for over three years as an Accessibility Specialist in our THG's Technology division. The accessibility team advises, assesses, and enhances the culture surrounding accessibility to ensure an inclusive experience for customers and colleagues.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing people's progress on their accessibility journeys. Discussions about disability can be sensitive, and people are hesitant to ask questions. However, progress needs such conversations to be commonplace. As more people engage with accessibility, asking questions and implementing best practice becomes routine.

Accessibility is making something usable to as many people as possible regardless of disability or access need. In addition, accessibility ensures people with disabilities can be independent, and fully participate in society in an equitable way. Accessibility is an increasingly critical issue. Globally, over 1.3 billion people have one or more disabilities. Neglecting accessibility means excluding people with disabilities or access needs, resulting in lost revenue and talent. Organisations who prevent equitable experiences for people with disabilities will alienate potential customers and employees.

Accessibility positively impacts everyone, not just people with disabilities. Consider captions, sometimes known as subtitles, I have no doubts a significant number of people use them, you don’t need to be deaf or hard of hearing to prefer media with captions. Therefore, it’s particularly rewarding to consider the positive change being made for everyone.

Outside of accessibility, and seeing people’s journeys, my favourite thing about working at THG is the people. The dynamism, energy, and curiosity I see makes it a pleasure to work with and meet new people across the group.

Regardless of your knowledge or role, a common thread among those curious about or engaged in accessibility wants to make a positive impact. Every effort to make something accessible and usable breaks down barriers, creates equitable experiences, and challenges preconceptions. You don’t need to be an expert to make a difference. Knowledge and skills can be taught, but the drive to effect positive change is in most people. Ask for help, engage with people with disabilities, learn about accessibility, be curious, advocate for inclusivity, and you will undoubtedly become a positive change maker.

A vital part of our efforts at THG is the Accessibility Champion Network, a central hub for accessibility. It highlights best practices, fosters a community within THG, and drives positive change. The network’s open to everyone, and we encourage participation, idea-sharing, and feedback. We're also looking for volunteers to become Network Ambassadors. Ambassadors play a crucial role in expanding the network, increasing our visibility, and progressing our aims. The aims being, to elevate accessibility awareness across the business, promote an accessibility-first mindset, and prioritise inclusion in all we do."
