Ciara Palfreyman

Through our Interfaith Connections series, Marie Fleur, PTP Associate — shares her experience of fasting for Lent and her personal journey with faith from an early age. Now a parent, she reflects on how she embraces the principles her faith has taught her and highlights the importance of expressing beliefs in the workplace.
I was born into a Catholic family and was baptized at an early age. Faith has always played a significant role in my life, deeply rooted in my upbringing. My father has been playing the guitar in our parish choir since I was a baby, and I grew up surrounded by the warmth and support of our church community. From a young age, I actively participated in church activities.
I joined the choir, was part of the parish’s scouting group, and engaged with various youth groups. These experiences not only strengthened my faith but also helped me build lasting friendships and a sense of belonging within the community.
Now, as a parent, I strive to pass on these values to my children. My daughter is currently part of our parish choir, and my son is involved in the scouting group. It brings me great joy to see them embracing the same principles of faith, service, and community that have shaped my own life.
Faith is a personal yet universal experience that can bring people together, fostering a sense of connection and understanding. In the workplace, where we spend a significant portion of our lives, being open about our beliefs can help build meaningful relationships. For me, sharing my faith is not about imposing my beliefs on others, but rather about creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing their true selves.
When we share our beliefs, values, and traditions, we create opportunities for dialogue and mutual respect. It allows us to support each other through challenges and celebrate our diverse perspectives. THG has an inclusive culture that encourages individuality, and I appreciate the openness to different backgrounds and experiences. By being open about my faith, I hope to inspire and encourage others to embrace their own values, whether religious or otherwise.
Faith has been a guiding force in my life, shaping who I am and how I interact with the world. At THG, I am grateful for the opportunity to share this aspect of my identity while also learning from the diverse experiences of my colleagues. By fostering an environment of understanding and respect, we can build stronger connections and create a workplace where everyone feels valued.
My Fasting Journey
Lent is a 40-day period when Catholics prepare for Easter by praying, fasting, and helping others. It begins on Ash Wednesday and ends before Easter. During this time, we remember Jesus’ sacrifices and strive to grow closer to God.
To prepare for Lent, I take time to reflect on my faith, set personal goals, and plan ways to grow spiritually. This season alters my daily routine as I adjust my meals, dedicate more time to prayer, and focus on mindfulness and self-discipline. Each year, I choose something to improve about myself, strengthening my faith and honoring Jesus’ sacrifices.
This year, I have committed to avoiding meat on Friday's, pray more and working on being less impulsive.
The support of those around me makes this journey more meaningful. Understanding fasting choices, offering encouragement, and joining in acts of kindness are valuable ways to walk alongside others during this time.
Through prayer, sacrifice, and self-improvement, I seek to deepen my faith this Lent, preparing my heart for Easter and the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection.
